Do we start the design process with the kitchen?
This question may seem trivial, but upon deeper reflection, one realizes that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Our daily rituals often revolve around meal preparation, and the space where we do so becomes incredibly significant.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to wake up in the morning and see a blossoming orchard through the window? Or to bustle around the kitchen, observing the sunrise and the delicate dew on the lawn? The feeling when the spring breeze wafts in through open windows and the sun’s rays illuminate the interior of our home is truly unmatched.
The kitchen serves not only as a place where we prepare meals but also as a sanctuary where family life is celebrated, and sometimes difficult conversations take place. It is a place that often becomes synonymous with domestic warmth and hospitality. Indeed, one could say that the kitchen unveils many of our private secrets and reflects our values and way of life.
Therefore, when designing a new home, it is worthwhile to start with the kitchen. It will serve as the focal point around which the entire building concept is crafted. With detailed knowledge of the future residents’ needs, habits, and preferences, we can create a unique concept tailored to their individual requirements.
Details of design
When contemplating larger architectural projects, we always begin with smaller details. By designing the kitchen, we are designing dreams and aspirations. Hence, it can sometimes be challenging to choose from ready-made designs that are generic and fail to consider our individual needs and dreams.
My own kitchen is a bit eccentric, primarily due to the materials used in its construction. They were left by the previous owner, but I decided to keep them, mainly because of the visible effort put into this concept. The countertops made of 15-centimeter concrete are truly amazing, although I occasionally bump into a precious cup. But at least I don’t have to bend down, and my spine is grateful!
Kitchens have always been important in various historical epochs, but especially in the Renaissance era. They were the heart of the home, where social and cultural life thrived. Cooks enjoyed high social status, and lavishly set tables symbolized wealth and hospitality.
Therefore, the kitchen will always hold immense significance as the center of domestic life and a symbol of culinary culture and social status.
